Zack Snyder has revealed his shock at the eerie parallels between his new film Army of the Dead, and the coronavirus pandemic.

From the temperature guns used to identify symptoms, to the politicising of the situation, the director admitted that the incredibly apt references in the Netflix zombie thriller were all unintentional.

‘Those are the things that really surprised me, the weird reality of what a world with zombies in it might be and how we might really react,’ he told Metro.co.uk.

‘I had this idea that the guys would have these temperature guns, and they’ll take your temperature to find out whether or not you have the zombie plague or not.

‘And only in retrospect, suddenly a year later, everyone’s got these temperature guns and it’s this weird thing. Those are the things that I think are really surprising about a film like this.’

Zack continued: ‘We thought it was hilarious that something like this would be politicised, that politicians would have their own agendas when it comes to something like this – we thought that was funny, but it turns out that maybe that’s not funny, that’s actually really accurate to what would happen.’

Dave Bautista stars in the Netflix thriller, leading the cast as Scott Ward.

Chatting to Metro.co.uk, the Guardians of the Galaxy star revealed that the filmmaker encouraged collaboration to the point that the actor ended up changing one of the key scenes in the movie.

In an early scene, Scott is forced to kill his wife after she turns into a zombie.

While the heartbreaking moment sets the tone for much of the movie, and for Scott’s relationship with his daughter Kate (Ella Purnell), it was originally completely different.

‘The way it was originally written and the way it was choreographed out with the stunt team, is he really just walked in, he saw his wife was a zombie and he went to town on his wife, without any emotion or anything, just killed his wife,’ Dave explained.

‘I had a conversation with Zack – I was like, “This isn’t right”. Not only is this guy walking in and realising his wife is dead, now he’s got to put a knife in her head.

‘Imagine the struggle emotionally if someone actually had to do that. He was all up for it, he was like, “You’re absolutely right”. So, we did it, it just turned out to be such an emotional moment.’

Army of the Dead is released on Netflix on May 21.
