Jack Savoretti on ‘falling in love again’ in lockdown as wife and children make surprise cameo on album

Jack Savoretti might not have left the house during lockdown but he describes the whole experience as like a ‘second honeymoon’ with his wife Jemma Powell.

Frankly, that might just be the most positive outlook we’ve heard on the coronavirus pandemic yet.

The 37-year-old crooner is returning with a new album this summer, titled Europiana, while his new single with Chic legend Nile Rodgers, titled Who’s Hurting Who, is out now.

If his new material sounds like you’ve taken a trip to the Mediterranean and enjoyed a summer fling, it’s probably because that’s what was going on in Jack’s head.

‘I spent a lot of time in lockdown wishing I was somewhere else like a lot of people did,’ Jack told Metro.co.uk. ‘Fantasising about summer holidays in the Mediterranean and so I started recreating that feeling at home.

‘Even on the romantic side, it’s kind of fleeting in the summer. There’s a reason they call it a summer romance. I wanted that feeling when you listen to this album.’

Jack is married to former Doctor Who voice actress Jemma and they live in their Oxfordshire home with their three children.

Being in lockdown gave him the chance, like many artists, to stop and take stock of his blessings.

‘I fell in love with my life again,’ he revealed. ‘I was really lucky that what was around me was my children, my wife and I suddenly felt that was something worth celebrating.

‘That was the approach of the whole of the last year – to start appreciating the things that I have and stop panicking about the things that I haven’t got.’

Jemma and the kids make guest appearances on a couple of songs on Europiana as Jack wanted them to ‘bookmark the album’.

It was just one of the ways Jack made sure the bond was still burning in his marriage during lockdown.

‘We were lucky, we had a second honeymoon. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that we were just able to be ourselves,’ he said.

‘There’s another side to us which is just us without the music, without the art, and we really got to get in touch with that and for us to be together for such a long time was so nice.

‘It was something we decided to take in our stride and try to make it as fun as possible. We give ourselves a night a week called Fabulous Friday so every Friday night we have a party with the kids and they get to choose the theme.’

Another special guest features on the album – none other than Mr Nile Rodgers.

Jack hails the musician as ‘one of the most divine, kind, generous and humble people I’ve met in this business’.

He added: ‘There’s a reason why he’s revered and idolised the way he is and the reason why he’s still working. He loves what he does. He’s not doing this for a pay cheque or for fame and fortune. He’s got plenty of that and it was so inspiring to see that.

‘He’s everything I look for in terms of staying alive in this industry.’

Jack’s last album, 2019’s Singing To Strangers, earned the singer his first number one album while the previous two hit the top 10.

It raised eyebrows that he was snubbed from the Brits nominations despite his chart-topper and has never received recognition from the awards.

‘Acknowledgement is always nice from anyone. There’s so much politics behind all these different awards ceremonies that I’m not really surprised by my lack of invitation,’ he reasoned.

However, always looking on the bright side, he joked: ‘There’s been many parties that I haven’t been invited to before and I always manage to find a way to sneak in.’

Jack Savoretti’s new single, Who’s Hurting Who, is out now while his new album Europiana is out on June 25. Tickets for his 2022 tour are also on-sale.
