Jimmy Kimmel and Chris Rock have bashed the ‘humourless’ 2021 Oscars in a savage takedown, sharing their ‘relief’ over not taking part.
This year’s Academy Awards marked the third time in a row that the ceremony went without an official host, with a variety of stars taking to the stage to announce the nominees and winners.
There hasn’t been a host since Kevin Hart stepped down from the role for the 2019 Oscars.
While Jimmy and Chris have both hosted the awards show in the past, the pair of them admitted that they’re glad they weren’t a part of the event this year, going as far as to say the star-studded occasion was void of any humour.
During an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Chris, 56, said: ‘You know what we did this year, you and I?’
When prompted by Jimmy, the comedian then gleefully answered: ‘We didn’t host the Oscars! Haha!’
Jimmy, 53, burst out laughing, responding to Chris’ jibe: ‘We sure didn’t!’
The TV host disclosed that it was ‘a real weird feeling of relief to not have been involved in that at all’.
‘I was like a backseat driver. Like my father used to say, “Brake! Brake!” I was like, “Joke! Joke!”’ Chris said, resulting in cheers and whoops from people in the studio.
Having discussed Chris upcoming role in Saw film Spiral, Jimmy said: ‘It’s weird because in a way it’s like the opposite of your conversation with the people at Saw.
‘You’re like, “Have you ever considered adding some humour into the Saw series?” Somebody must have gone to the Oscars and said, “Have you ever considered subtracting all the humour from the Oscars?”’
‘They did a good job,’ Chris added mischievously.
Jimmy hosted the Academy Awards in 2017 and 2018, while Chris hosted it in 2005 and 2016.
Earlier this year, Oscars producer Steven Soderbergh confirmed that the Best Actor category was moved to the end of the show as it was thought that the late Chadwick Boseman would win.
The Black Panther star, who died in August 2020 after suffering from colon cancer, was widely expected to win a posthumous Oscar for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
The award ended up going to Sir Anthony Hopkins for his role in The Father.
