Jordan Spieth Discloses the Intricacies of a Player/Caddie Relationship

Jordan Spieth is well and truly back on the PGA Tour. The three-time major winner delivered a strong performance during the first round at the AT&T Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch. A lot can be said about Spieth’s display on Thursday, and his deep discussion with caddie Michael Greller garnered a lot of attention as well. So what was it all about? 

Spieth and his caddie Michael Greller had a moment during Round 1 which caught the cameraperson’s attention. Fans got more insight into the matter as the nearby mic picked up what the duo was discussing. 

It happened at the par-5 12th when Spieth misguided his tee-shot. The ball traveled 328 yards but landed outside the fairway in a very tricky spot. It landed on a rough patch and opened up a conversation between Spieth and his caddie as to how he should approach the lie. 

Jordan Spieth maintains 100% transparency with Michael Greller

Spieth and Michael Greller have worked together for a long time. The latter has been carrying Spieth’s bag ever since he turned pro, and the relationship has been reaping benefits for the golfer. 

However, that doesn’t mean the player/caddie duo enjoys a harmonious relationship. They often get into small arguments about various issues. Jordan Spieth was asked to clear up on the transparency he maintains with Greller, to which he replied: 

“Yeah, in that situation everybody and their caddie is gonna discuss what to do. You’ve got a chance it either gain strokes or lose strokes with a decision, and I think for Michael it helped him when I said, This one is on me. I hear you. I know the risk. I’m going to take it and it’s on me,” Spieth mentioned. 

“I think both of us really like when we are committed and in saying that, whether he’s going to say I veto, this is a bad decision, you just made a bogey, trying to get it back kind of thing. That was more I feel good about the lie and I was thinking clearly and just said, This one is on me,” he added. 

It is quite common for players to have words with their caddies before approaching a shot. Jordan Spieth is thankful that he didn’t mess up his shot on the 12th or he’d have got an earful from Michael Greller.
