Max Verstappen’s ‘Impatience’ Helping Lewis Hamilton in F1 Title Fight: Marko

Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have been locked in an F1 title battle for the ages. Both of them have raced wheel-to-wheel at each of the four races, with Hamilton having his nose ahead, right now. He is leading the championship by 14 points from Verstappen with three wins to one. But it could have been so different if not for Verstappen‘s temperamental behaviour, according to Dr. Helmut Marko.

The Red Bull consultant believes that his apprentice is making far too many mistakes. And these mistakes have been the result of his lack of patience to wait for the right moment.

“One thing is certain: Hamilton is even cooler. He can wait for his chance. Max, it has to be said, is rather temperamental in character. Or to put it another way: more impatient. That’s currently working in Hamilton’s favor,” Marko told F1 Insider.

Verstappen’s already made mistakes by exceeding track limits in Bahrain and Portugal. In Spain, pole position was also for the taking, but he went wide at turn four, losing four tenths of a second. Though, the good thing is that he’s willing to learn from his mistakes –

“Immediately afterwards he’s too charged up, so he’s not yet open to such discussions. But if it’s clearly evident that things could have been done differently, then he definitely recognizes that. That is also discussed, not publicly and at the right time.”

Marko believes Max Verstappen has to ‘tame’ his ambition to topple Lewis Hamilton

One of the things where Max earns his plaudits is his ambition; he’s willing to take that extra risk to go for the kill. But that overzealous nature may cost him the title this season, according to Marko. Although Marko appreciates this quality in Max, he wants him to curb that this season.

“We are a passionate racing team where the battle, the challenge, is paramount. A driver like Max Verstappen fits in perfectly. But you still have to tame that to the extent that you also have the World Championship in mind,” Marko emphasized.

The Mercedes driver is a metronome, a seasoned veteran, and statistically the greatest drive of all-time. Hence, Max will need to look beyond his natural talent to dethrone him and win his maiden title.
