The Circle winner Alex Hobern gave co-star part of his £75k prize money over betrayal

The Circle winner Alex Hobern actually gave a rival contestant some of his prize money because he felt so bad.

The star appeared in the very first series of the Channel 4 show, and catfished his way to victory by playing as his real-life girlfriend, Kate.

Throughout the show, ‘Kate’ flirted up a storm with Dan Mosaku, who was convinced that their bond was real and they would be leaving the show in a romance – leading us to one of the most iconic meet-ups in TV history.

And Alex confessed that he felt so guilty for the betrayal that he actually gave his co-star some of the £75,000 prize he walked away with, after he won the original £50k jackpot and the £25k ‘Viewer’s Champion’ vote.

Chatting to LadBible, he said: ‘I felt very guilty from the moment Dan and I sat down and for months afterwards. Particularly after I won both the prizes.

‘I even ended up giving Dan some of the prize money due to the feeling that I had betrayed him in front of the nation.’

Alex came face-to-face with Dan in a very tense final, after weeks of catfishing him as ‘Kate’, and it’s safe to say it didn’t quite go the way he planned.

Side note: It was utter TV gold.

He added: ‘Dan was actually removed from the situation initially to allow him to calm down, leaving me stewing on my own in the room for a while. Then he was returned for the conversation that was aired. Very, very awkward.’

Despite the dramatic scenes, the pair actually became very good friends after the show and started a podcast together – and are still in touch now.

Alex’s words come after it was announced that the Circle had been axed by Channel 4, after three seasons, leaving fans totally shocked.

The news was confirmed last week, with a spokesperson for the broadcaster stating: ‘The Circle has been a huge hit for young audiences and has grown successively over three seasons on Channel 4, consistently outperforming slot averages.

‘We’re incredibly proud to have worked with Studio Lambert North and Motion Content Group to invest in such an innovative show and to have given it a springboard for its international format success.

‘In much the same way as when we originally commissioned The Circle, Channel 4 has a responsibility to continually look at how we reinvent and create space for new ideas, and so we have decided not to commission the show for a fourth season.

‘We’d like to thank Studio Lambert, Motion and all those involved for The Circle’s huge success over the last three series.’

However, there could be hope for fans as Netflix is said to be in talks to pick up the UK edition, after hosting the US episodes on the platform.

All episodes of The Circle are available to stream on All4 now.
