What’s Going Wrong With Dominic Thiem?

Tennis ace Dominic Thiem is one of the most exciting players on the Tour. Although he has been on Tour for a considerable period, he still belongs to the new crop of players. He is the first player from this new lot to win a Grand Slam title – the US Open 2020.

With each season gone by, Dominic Thiem has shown great progress. Initially, he found it difficult to beat the big three. However, as time has gone by, he has found a formula to beat these stars on a regular basis. However, the current year has not been the best for him.

Dominic Thiem began the season poorly

Thiem commenced his season in Australia. Poor results at the ATP Cup and an early exit at the Australian Open was not the ideal start he would’ve wished for. The Austrian looked to get back to winning ways, but horrific results continued to haunt him in Doha and Dubai.

To add to the misery, he suffered from a knee injury, which forced him to skip the next few tournaments. He did feel the need to take a break from tennis, to regroup, and get back to his usual standards. Dominic returned after a short break and competed at the Mutua Madrid Open.

He lost in the semifinal to eventual winner Alexander Zverev. In the present week, he suffered a defeat at the hands of Italian youngster Lorenzo Sonego in the Round of 16 matches in Rome. These results weren’t expected from a player of Thiem’s caliber.

His poor performances are worrying with the French Open around the corner, as the Austrian has been a two-time finalist there.

At some point in their careers, all great players go through low phases. But with time, they find a way to bounce back and register positive results. Dominic is in a similar situation at the moment. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how the Grand Slam champion fairs at Roland Garros this season.
