ECW Legend New Jack Passes Away at 58

Former ECW Superstar Jerome ‘New Jack’ Young passed away earlier this afternoon. As multiple reports suggest, the superstar collapsed after a heart attack in his residence in North Carolina.

The report was first confirmed by PWInsider the disappointing news of the demise. They reported Jack’s wife Jennifer confirmed the news of the demise of the 58-years-old wrestler.

Noted for being one of the most hardcore wrestlers in ECW history, New Jack was known for using weapons in his matches. Apart from some brutal and bloody matches, Jack was also known for his stellar promos.

He broke into the wrestling scene with “Gangstas,” a tag team he formed with Mustafa. Jack won the ECW Tag Team Championship three times during his six years tenure with the company. He won the title with Mustafa twice and once with John Kronus.

Jack also wrestled briefly on Impact wrestling after his ECW release. His career was filled with several controversial incidents (including the Mass Transit Incident back in 1996) in the ring that landed him in legal trouble.

The Dark Side of the Ring’s episode named “The Life and Crimes of New Jack. covered some of the stories on their second season. He was also featured in the popular series Beyond the Mat in 1999.

As soon as the news broke out, superstars across promotions, industry insiders, and media outlets paid their respect to the late icon. See some of the tweets below –

Mickie James wrote a heartfelt message regarding her interaction with Jack, “I’ve shared a few locker rooms with New Jack. He was always so cool and respectful to me. You do not know how grateful I was for that!! Truly saddened to hear of his passing. Sending his family, friends, all his loved ones so much of my prayers, love, & strength. “

Industry insider Dave Meltzer wrote, “Sorry to hear about the death of New Jack. He was a unique character, has a scary aura. Had the charisma to be a WWE/WCW star, but they obviously thought the negatives outweighed the positives.”

Jack’s former colleagues recalled working with him in ECW.

Former ECW Champion and current NXT Producer Corino recalled, “We used to do these crazy 8-mans in ECW. Jack would always be last and I’d get goosebumps when that music hit. Then pray I wasn’t getting the crutch that night! Thank you Jack.”
