Eurovision: Member of Polish delegation tests positive for Covid-19
Eurovision’s Polish delegation will miss out on the Turquoise Carpet event, after a member tested positive for coronavirus.
It’s not the ideal start for the Polish act, RAFAL, as he prepares for the song contest, which is being held under strict coronavirus restrictions.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) issued a statement saying: ‘During a routine test upon arrival at the Eurovision Song Contest venue on Saturday 15 May, a member of the Polish delegation tested positive for COVID-19.
‘They had last been at the venue on Thursday 13 May when the whole delegation were in possession of a negative COVID-19 test.
‘In accordance with our health and safety protocol this person has now gone into isolation.
‘As a precautionary measure the other members of their delegation will also now undergo a PCR test and go into quarantine.
‘As a result of this the Polish delegation will not attend the Turquoise Carpet event in person on Sunday 16 May.
‘We will have further updates in due course and send our best wishes to the whole delegation.’
RAFAL was selected as Poland’s entry earlier this year.
Junior Eurovision aficionados will recognise the entrant, who has replaced Alicja after she represented the nation with Empires last year.
He hosted the Junior contest last year, and is hoping to make it to the final with his song The Ride.
The contest is due to start on May 18, with the BBC taking on widespread coverage of the event.
It may look different to what fans are used to, with the arena in Rotterdam will be welcoming 3,500 fans – around half capacity.
39 countries are taking part this year, with Brit Award-winning and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter James Newman representing the UK with his single Embers.
