The new Lord of The Rings TV series on Amazon Prime Video is closer than ever, and now the makers of the show have shared a new behind the scenes photo.

The adaptation reportedly wrapped filming in New Zealand back in December, having restarted after being halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A new picture shows director Charlotte Brändström and a film crew member standing before a stunning mountain backdrop on location, adding the caption: ‘Greetings from Middle-earth.’

It comes after Outlander and The Witcher director Charlotte confirmed her involvement on the project.

‘I’m very excited to be guided through Middle-earth by [showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay’s] vision and immerse myself in the iconic world of J.R.R. Tolkien,’ Charlotte said in a statement.

‘It’s a great privilege to be in New Zealand to work with Amazon Studios’ outstanding ensemble of creative talents. There are countless things still to see in Middle-earth, and great works to do.’

Anticipation for Amazon’s new series continues to rise, especially after it was reported that costs are set to reach as high as $465m (£336m).

The upcoming television adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s fantasy novel will be set before the events of the critically-acclaimed trilogy directed by Peter Jackson.

The Lord of the Rings series boasts an all-star cast, including Sir Lenny Henry, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo and Maxim Baldry.

The synopsis for the show was unveiled in January this year, teasing that ‘heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history’ will be introduced.

‘This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness,’ the summary read, as revealed by TheOneRing.net.

‘Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.

‘From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.’

The Lord of the Rings TV series will be available on Amazon Prime Video.
