‘In Round 1 He Was Hurting Him’ – Daniel Cormier Comments on Michael Chandler’s Big Mistake Against Charles Oliveria

The UFC Lightweight division finally saw a new champion as Charles Oliveira defeated Michael Chandler at the UFC 262 main event. The fight which was touted to be one of the best of the night did not disappoint and although it lasted just 2 rounds, it was a treat to watch.

Charles Oliveira finally became the UFC lightweight champion after he KO’d Michael Chandler in the second round of the fight. Oliveira hit ‘Iron’ with a perfect left hook, dropping him to the ground, and continued to hit great strikes until the referee stopped the fight.

Although Chandler eventually lost, he was in good shape during the first round and was performing great. After the fight, many people commented on what went wrong for Chandler, and among them was UFC legend Daniel Cormier.

During a recent interview, they asked Cormier about whether he thought Chandler made a mistake by not letting Oliveira up off the ground in the first round.

To which DC replied, “You know honestly every time on the feet in round one he was hurting Charles Oliveira. I even made mention of it on the broadcast. I said if I’m Chandler, I’m letting him up because Oliveira was backing up.”

“But when the second round started, Oliveira made a constant decision not to go backwards. He went forward. He took the center of the Octagon, put Chandler on his heels, and landed that beautiful left hook.” 

What next for Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira?

‘Do Bronx’ has finally become the UFC champion after much hard work and dedication. Therefore, it seems that for some time the fighter will stay away from the Octagon and enjoy his victory. However, as soon as he returns to action, it might be against the winner of the Poirier vs. McGregor fight.

While for Michael Chandler, this was just his second outing in the UFC and he was competing for the title. He had previously won his debut UFC fight against Dan Hooker via a first-round TKO. Chandler will now face some stiff competition before he can challenge for the title again. The most probable opponent for Chandler would be former interim champion Justin Gaethje.

For now, though, both Chandler and Oliveira will be away from the Octagon for some time and we as fans will have to wait for our favorite fighters to return to action.
