When WandaVision aired on Disney Plus earlier this year, Agatha – first introduced as nosy neighbour Agnes – was one of the standouts of the MCU tale as she became entangled in the cosy married life of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany).
Following the discovery that Agnes was in actual fact a powerful witch in disguise, her theme tune, Agatha All Along, spawned countless memes and earned the character an ever-growing following.
During a recent interview, Kathryn, who’s set to star in the sequel to Knives Out, opened up about where her inspiration for the persona came from, particularly in the sitcom-style episodes set in the 1950s and 1960s.
Speaking with her co-stars Elizabeth and Teyonah Parris at Deadline’s Contender Television awards-season event, Kathryn explained that her grandmother on her mother’s side had a significant influence on her portrayal.
‘My maternal grandmother,’ she said. ‘I heard her sing-song voice, definite [during] the ’50s and ’60s [eras]; everything ended on a question. She was in there.’
When Agatha finally revealed her true self on WandaVision, viewers were amazed by her magnificent costume, which faithfully recreated the ensemble worn by the character in the Marvel comics.
However, while it looked a treat, it was a struggle to wear, Kathryn admitted, while filming in the scorching heat in California.
While speaking to Insider last month, she revealed how she kept cool under the layers, as a secret device was installed to stop her from overheating.
‘It was very hot. So I had to wear a cooling suit under my costume, which is something that I had never heard of before, but it’s like tubes of cold water,’ she said.
‘Between takes my amazing costume assistant Beth would squeeze coils of cold water underneath my costume.’
Kathryn’s Wandavision co-star Kat Dennings, who reprised her role as Darcy Lewis from the Thor movies, recently announced her engagement to musician Andrew W.K. mere days after confirming their romance.
It’s not yet known whether Kat will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder, which is currently filming in Australia.
WandaVision is available to watch on Disney Plus.
