While millions of Brits will be dashing to each other’s homes with open arms ready for the hug they’ve been craving for months, Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield are still being kept apart by social distance regulations on This Morning.

But why?

Well, if you skipped into work today and hugged your colleagues for the first time in 2021 this morning there is actually a minor detail in the government’s road map you probably missed.

Holly and Phil have kept a safe distance on screen for over a year, and actually there’s still a way to go before they can actually embrace each other.

‘Holly and I will have to wait a little bit longer for our first hug,’ Phil explained opening the show today. ‘Because hugging isn’t permitted in the workplace.’

‘This is so rubbish!’ shouted Holly. ‘Geographically we can’t hug here.’

Phillip explained: ‘We’re outside, but this is still the workplace. You know? So what do you do?’ before sending an ‘air hug’.

While today May 17 marks the first time Brits can hug their loved ones, Dr Hilary Jones still advised viewers to tread with caution during today’s Good Morning Britain, urging people to turn away and wear a mask while cuddling.

He told hosts Susanna Reid and Adil Ray: ‘Everyone is desperate to hug, I think it’s important to be selective, not to hug all and sundry but to hug people most close to you, that you have been really keen to hug.

‘It’s important to ask them, have they got any symptoms? Have they been exposed to anyone else in recent time? Have they been vaccinated?’

He continued: ‘It’s inhaling aerosol droplets from someone with the virus that’s almost guaranteed to transmit the virus.

‘So if it’s someone you haven’t seen for a while and you don’t know how they have been behaving, and if they have been socially responsible.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
