Innocent series 2: Who’s in the cast, what channel is it on and how many episodes are there?
Innocent is returning tonight with a brand new story and cast of characters.
The crime drama – which first aired across four consecutive nights back in 2018 – will be back with an entirely different ensemble after the initial run starred the likes of Lee Ingleby, Daniel Ryan and Hermione Norris.
The new episodes will centre around the death of 16-year-old student Matty Taylor and the fallout after he gets brutally murdered after an affair with teacher Sally Wright.
There will be a lot to unpack, and viewers will no doubt be hoping the series can live up to the high standard set by the first run three years ago.
Here’s everything you need to know about Innocent series two, including casting news, broadcasting details and more.
What happened in the first series of Innocent?
The first series focused on David Collins (Lee Ingleby), who has spent the last seven years in jail for the murder of his wife, Tara.
The series began with him being acquitted of the crime on a technicality – leaving Tara’s sister Alice (Hermione Norris), who has been taking care of his children and living off his ‘estate’ – fuming.
Out of prison, he was desperate to get his kids back and prove his innocence – putting suspicion on everyone around him.
Innocent series 2 cast
The new series stars former Coronation Street star Katherine Kelly – who played Becky McDonald on the cobbles from 2006 to 2012 – as teacher Sally.
She’ll be joined by Law & Order: UK actor Jamie Bamber as Sam, Doctors actress Laura Rollins as Paine and The Thick of It’s Priyanga Burford as Karen.
The cast is also rounded off by the likes of Shaun Dooley (Braithwaite), Amy-Leigh Hickman (Bethany), Lucy Black (Maria Taylor), Ellie Rawnsley (Anna) and Michael Stevenson (Brown).
What channel is Innocent on?
Like the first series, the new episodes of Innocent are set to air on ITV.
Back in September, the channel’s Drama Commissioner Huw Kennair Jones said in a statement: ‘Innocent II is a thriller which keeps you guessing to the very end.
‘Chris and Matt’s brilliant scripts are compelling and the characters incredibly relatable. We’re thrilled to be working again with TXTV and Chris Lang on a second instalment of Innocent.’
When does Innocent start on TV?
We’re just hours away!
The new series kicks off tonight (May 17) with its first episode at 9pm on ITV.
As noted back in September, the first series was one of ITV’s highest rated dramas of 2018 with an average of over 7 million viewers for each of the four episodes, based on seven-day consolidated data – so you won’t want to miss out.
How many episodes in Innocent series 2?
Just like the initial run, there will be four episodes in the second series, each airing on consecutive nights this week.
Chris Lang and Matt Arlidge are back for the new season as co-producers and writers, while Silent Witness’ Tracey Larcombe has been on board as director.
The 60-minute episodes were shot on location in the Lake District and Ireland last year.
Innocent airs this week on ITV at 9pm Monday to Thursday.
