Jeremy Vine hugged his mum for the first time in over a year as they shared an emotional moment live on air.
The Channel 5 presenter – who turned 55 today – celebrated his birthday in the best way imaginable after not being able to hug his mum Diana during the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, with restrictions easing across the country on Monday, she visited him in the studio and brought him a present as they enjoyed a heart-warming reunion.
‘I’m delighted to say I can hug my mum for the first time in it feels like – well, it is more than a year, isn’t it? Let’s just see if we can find my mum in the studio somewhere,’ he smiled, already overcome with emotion as she stepped out on set.
‘Take it easy mum! This is – coming up for my birthday, and I resisted giving you a hug when I saw you arrive during the adverts.’
The pair shared a sweet embrace, and Jeremy admitted he was close to tears.
‘Hello! Are you alright, mum? Oh I’m going to cry now,’ he said. ‘Oh, mum! Hello! Thanks mum!’
They asked each other how they were doing, and he pointed out how ‘crazy’ the situation is.
He added: ‘I’m doing OK, but it’s a bit crazy this, isn’t it? Oh gosh!’
Jeremy also commented on how his mum has been on her own during the pandemic after his father died in 2018.
He said: ‘Losing my dad, your husband, two years ago – at least you didn’t have to go through all of this, but it’s left you on your own. Anyway, we’re hugging again!’
As Diana took a seat at the makeshift bar set up in the studio today, Jeremy turned the attention back to his birthday and wondered if he should be opening his present during the show.
‘No, it’s not that significant,’ she quipped.
Jeremy and his crew did applaud his mum for the effort she took to get on set to share in the happy moment as she took a 15 mile taxi ride to be there.
‘Coming up in the cab, 15 miles, a little round of applause,’ he smiled. ‘You did a great job, mum!’
The Jeremy Vine Show airs weekdays on Channel 5 at 9.15am.
