Jimmy Fallon isn’t going anywhere as The Tonight Show renewed for another five years
The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon isn’t going anywhere after the late-night talk show has been renewed for another five years.
Yep, the comedian will continue on as the sixth host of the popular NBC franchise despite ratings reaching an all-time low last year.
Susan Rovner, the chairman of entertainment content for TV and streaming, announced the renewal during an interview with Hoda Kotb during the NBCUniversal upfront.
The news came after the show drew its 4th lowest ratings ever in January, when he averaged 1.063 million total viewers.
Last September saw the show hit an all-time low when 992,000 total viewers tuned in amid the pandemic, the first time his ratings dipped under a million.
During the upfront, it was noted how important the funnyman is to NBC thanks to his other projects unrelated to The Tonight Show.
Under his new deal, Jimmy will also develop The Kids Tonight Show – another late-night program hosted by young people that will premiere on streaming service, Peacock.
The comedian is also developing a revival for Password, the popular Bob Stewart game show – a game he often plays with guests on his show.
Jimmy is also set to host That’s My Jam, which is based his popular talk show segments such as Wheel of Music Impressions and Roots Name That Song.
The primetime show will see two celebrity teams compete for charity in a series of games that involve music, trivia, dance, and other performances.
NBC has also begun developing an animated series based on Jimmy’s children’s books such as 5 More Sleeps ‘Til Christmas, which is a holiday special about a kid excitedly counting down the days until Santa’s arrival.
The star has been hosting The Tonight Show since 2014 after he took over from Jay Leno. Steve Higgins is his announcer alongside The Roots as his house band.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs weeknights on NBC.
