On This Morning Phillip Schofield got into a debate with royal reporter Camilla Tominey when he defended Prince Harry’s comments on a recent podcast.

Harry went on Dax Shephard’s The Armchair Expert last week, where he spoke about the media, growing up with privilege as well as his own mental health.

During the interview, Harry described his royal family life as ‘a mix between The Truman Show and being in a zoo.’

Today Phillip said a lot of Harry’s quotes have been taken out of context, while Camilla questioned why someone who wants to have boundaries when it comes to his personal life continues to speak out.

‘I went into it thinking “Oh shut up Harry” but I came out of it thinking “Good on you”,’ Phillip revealed.

‘I thought he was very eloquent when he spoke about mental health.’

The presenter said he thought that ‘there’s a lot that’s very unfair’, as comments Harry has made – especially comments surrounding the American constitution and Prince Charles – are being misconstrued by the media.

Even though Camilla thinks Harry is ‘perfectly entitled’ to talk about his life and be ‘very candid about his mental health’ she doesn’t think it’s wise to make comments about the Queen or to speak out of turn when it comes to the Royal Family.

The presenter disagreed with Camilla, as he said he understood why Harry continues to share his experiences.

Phillip quipped: ‘But he also said he’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t because no matter what he says, the headlines are cruel, there’s no support for him whatsoever.

‘I understand that he’s done what he’s done and there have been times where what he’s said has not been wise, you don’t want to upset your grandmother because she has just buried her husband, but you can’t talk about mental health without talking about your own experience.’

Phillip had an issue with headlines saying Harry has been calling America’s first amendment ‘bonkers’ but the presenter wanted to clear up Harry’s comments.

‘There is a lot that’s very unfair. There’s a lot of [headlines] today saying the American constitution is “bonkers” but if you listen to this podcast it’s all a part of what he’s talking about,’ Phillip explained.

‘What he actually said is “I don’t want to comment on the first amendment, I’ve only just gotten here and everything’s a bit bonkers.”’

Phillip went on to say he thinks we should take alleged comments with no sources with a grain of salt: ‘There’s so much allegedly, we don’t know what to think.’

This Morning airs week days on ITV at 10am.
