‘What Submission?’- Katlyn Chookagian Slams Critics Who Claimed She Tapped Out at UFC 262 to Viviane Araujo

UFC flyweight Katlyn Chookagian spoke to the media following her decision victory over number 7 ranked contender, Viviane Araujo. Heading into the final round, the fight was seemingly on a knife-edge. However, Chookagian put her best foot forward and dominated round three. Chiefly, Araujo wasn’t too happy with the decision and believed she had done enough to snatch up the victory.

The aforementioned contest wasn’t without controversy in dimensions other than the scoring either. As the fight played out, Araujo mounted Chookagian. In this sequence, slow-motion replays picked up a possible tap-out by Chookagian. The commentary team reviewed the footage in real-time and concluded that ‘Blonde Fighter’ did not tap.

Katlyn Chookagian stands her ground

While talking to the media after her fight, ‘ Blonde Fighter’ vehemently dispelled any possibility that she tapped out. She explained that in order to tap, she would have needed to be in a compromising position at the time. Additionally, Chookagian also defended the judges’ decision to award her the victory in the contest.

“What submission? You have to have your hands locked. She had a headlock because she doesn’t really know her Jiu-Jitsu. Yeah, no. You have to have a submission to get the tap. Definitely not.”

“Yeah, I thought won the fight. But, of course, decision, I’ve always watched fights on Saturday for hours, and every fight card you see a decision that you’re kinda like, ‘What?’ So, there is always that little part of you that’s nervous, but I was confident I thought like I won.” 

With the win over Araujo, Chookagian, who defended her number 2 ranking, fended off yet another contender. She’s knocked off one contender after the next and she continues to be one of the key players in the division. However, given the dominant manner with which Valentina Shevchenko beat her the first time, there isn’t much fan interest in a rematch.

Katlyn Chookagian will need to etch a statement stoppage win in an upcoming contest to once again warrant a rematch with Shevchenko.
