“Can’t Get Too Down on Myself”: Roger Federer Evaluates His Performance at Geneva Open 2021

20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer didn’t enjoy a great comeback at the Geneva Open 2021. The Swiss maestro was playing his first clay-court match since the French Open 2019, but he was still expected not to lose. Playing against Spain’s Pablo Andujar, he lost the match in three straights, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.

In the post-match interview, Federer admitted that he made minor mistakes in the match that should not have happened. He clearly reflected that it was these mistakes that cost him the match.

“Little mistakes like the ones that happened down the stretch of the match today have a better chance of not happening than happening, and for that, you just sometimes need to put yourself out there. Sometimes it’s not fun when you know how your limitations are, and for me, it’s always difficult,” said Federer in the interview.

The Swiss maestro revealed that people have a lot of expectations from him. He is definitely disenchanted after the result and believes that he should have played much better.

“People expect a lot from me, and I have high expectations for myself. So when I walk out of a match like today and I feel like I can play so much better, it feels strange, and it’s disappointing,” added the World No.8 player.

Even though he lost the match, Federer stated that these types of results will help him improve his performance. He admitted he won’t beat himself up too much over the loss but instead will introspect the result. He also mentioned that he will analyze the result with his coaching staff, just like he’d done after losing at the Qatar Open 2021.

“But at the same time, this is the process I need to go through. That’s why I can’t get too down on myself. I need to go back to the drawing board, and talk to the team again like we did after Doha,” concluded the 39-year-old.

After this, Roger Federer will head to Paris for the French Open 2021. He now has no tournament on his schedule before the Grand Slam and will surely train himself hard ahead of the new challenge. Will Federer be able to beat the odds and succeed at Roland Garros this year?
