There was tension in the air on Loose Women today when Jane Street-Porter asked Rachel Johnson why her brother Boris’ political career hasn’t been affected by his colourful private life.
Rachel appeared on the ITV programme to promote her podcast Difficult Women, where she interviews women who have worked hard to be where they are but might not be liked for doing so.
It was this conversation that led to Janet asking her about the Prime Minister, her brother, who has previously made headlines for alleged affairs.
‘One thing I would like to ask you is about your brother because do you think there’s a double standard at work here?’ Janet queried.
‘Because Theresa May did get criticised and nitpicked about what she wore, her hair and everything else, and yet your brother has, to put it mildly, an incredibly colourful private life that preceded his partner.
‘Yet, he sails through, he’s one of the lads, he’s winning seats up north, we have the blue wall where there used to be the red wall, all of these Labour voters voting Tory, there is a double standard and it does make me cross, don’t you feel it too?’
Rachel hoped to avoid answering the question, instead bringing up British politician Angela Rayner.
‘[Let me] just remind you of what Angela said when asked the exact same question. People point out that she had a baby at 16, she’s a grandmother, she wears stompy vegan boots and all of the rest of it and she said, “Why aren’t you focusing on the Prime Minister, his number of children, his number of marriages and all of the rest of it?”
‘As you say, he doesn’t get scrutiny for those kinds of things and I think that’s because that’s who he is, he doesn’t try to hide anything, he’s never tried to pretend to be anyone else but who he is.’
Rachel went on to say that Boris has ‘never tried to use his private life on the public stage’.
‘For him, it remains private. Of course, it’s a matter of speculation now that he’s Prime Minister and I’m sure that’s a double standard too, we just have to live with it.’
Janet made sure to remind the journalist that he has the means to do, as he has previously used lawyers to keep things private.
Rachel was quick to stop the conversation from going any further.
‘Janet, you wouldn’t ask him on to Loose Women and talk to him about me so I think we can draw it to close it,’ she said.
Before the segment ended, co-host Jane More had the last word.
‘We’re not the first people to ask you about him,’ she added.
This comes after it was announced that Boris’ refurb of his Downing Street flat will be formally investigated.
The Electoral Commission said it was satisfied there were ‘reasonable grounds’ to suspect an offence may have occurred in the controversial makeover.
As well as this, it was alleged in 2018 he cheated on his wife of over 25 years, Marina Wheeler.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
