John Boyega to return for Attack the Block sequel 10 years after original film
John Boyega is set to return to the block that launched his career as he and Joe Cornish have confirmed that Attack the Block 2 is officially in the works.
The sequel comes 10 years after the original, which has become a cult favourite despite not setting the box office alight at the time. It also scooped a number of industry gongs, including the audience awards at SXSW and the Los Angeles film festival.
The south London-set alien invasion comedy starred Boyega as gang leader Moses alongside a pre-Doctor Who Jodie Whittaker, as well as Nick Frost and Luke Treadaway.
Speaking to Deadline, Boyega said: ‘It’s been a decade since Attack the Block was released and so much has changed since then.
‘I’m excited to see this heightened story return to the streets of London.
‘Moses has remained one of my favourite characters to play and bringing him back is a huge honour.’
Boyega also shared the news on Instagram, with the Star Wars actor writing: ‘Yes Attack the Block 2 is happening! Yes I’ll be starring and producing! Yes I’m b****y excited! London VS them tings.’
The Golden Globe winner also added comments in his Stories and mentioned the ‘epic ideas brewing’.
‘Our Nigerian aunties from Peckham are about to get active in this one’, he teased.
Writer and director Cornish has also returned for the film, which he will produce alongside Boyega, Nira Park and James Wilson, who were also on the team for the first film.
Cornish shared that he was ‘thrilled’ to be ‘officially announcing our return to the world of Attack the Block’ on the film’s 10th anniversary.
He continued: ‘I can’t wait to work alongside John again, bringing audiences an even bigger slice of inner-city alien action.’
Will Ron and his weed room be back? Will Brewis and Pest and the rest of the gang return? Only time will tell, as plot details are yet to be revealed – other than the potential involvement of Nigerian aunties, and – we assume – aliens.
