Monaco GP Throwback: When Hamilton Called Schumacher a ‘Dirty Driver’ After Gutsy Overtake

The Monaco Grand Prix is well known as the one of most difficult races to overtake at. The street circuit’s narrow turns rarely provide any space to overtake, and so, when drivers do try to pass one another, it’s extremely tricky and dangerous. One such overtake happened at the 2011 Monaco weekend, which led to Lewis Hamilton saying some not-so-good words for Michael Schumacher.

While the Briton and the German gave the audience a beautiful overtake to drool over, it was eventually Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel who took the race win. Hamilton had to settle for a sixth-place finish, and Schumacher had to retire from the iconic Grand Prix.

So, as we head to Monaco for the upcoming weekend, let’s take a look back at one of the most iconic scenes from the fan-favorite Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton & Michael Schumacher had a fierce battle for position at Monaco GP

While the circuit disallows passing for the most part, there is one section of the track that is optimum for overtaking – the Nouvelle Chicane, which consists of Turns 10 and 11. And that is where Hamilton pounced on the German.

Even though Schumacher tried his best to keep the Briton at bay, Lewis eventually prevailed.

He took over from Michael and proceeded to express his dissatisfaction with the latter’s driving style on the team radio.

The Knight on his way to surpassing Schumacher’s record

Last season saw the Mercedes driver equal Michael’s seven world titles. Now in 2021, Hamilton aims to set his own record by winning his record-breaking eighth title.

Hamilton currently leads the championship with 94 points, and will aim to keep his lead as the season progresses. The upcoming race takes us back to Monaco, where he would aim for a win.
