DMX struggled to listen to a new song he wrote about his son because he became too emotional.

The late rapper’s album Exodus is being released on May 28, just under two months after his death aged 50 following a heart attack.

The tracklist for the posthumous album was released on Instagram and includes features from the likes of Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz.

One song, called Letter To My Son (Call Your Father) features Usher and Brian King Joseph, and is a track that was very close to DMX’s heart.

Producer Nikki Byles, who worked on the musician’s final recorded interview, recalled being allowed to listen to the album behind-the-scenes of the shoot.

Describing the tracks as ‘old X’ she added: ‘The songs are high, you know, it’s definitely some songs on there for like real rap fans. He has something for everyone on there.

‘And one particular song on there that was very, very, very close to him as a song to his kids. He couldn’t even get through it. Like, “It makes me cry. It makes me cry.”

‘So that was very special to him.’

Her co-producer Jay Allen added: ‘He came to pick us up in Times Square. He immediately plugged his iPhone in and was like, “Y’all gotta hear my music” and he was just playing these songs and he was so excited about it.

‘He talked about how he’s never had as many features on an album. This was a moment where he was happy to collaborate with some of the people that he worked with for his entire career. It was magical to see him excited about the album.’

The X Gon Give It To Ya rapper is survived by his fiancée Desiree Lindstrom.

The couple share four-year-old son Exodus Simmons who is DMX’s fifteenth child and was born in 2016.
