Viewers of the Great British Sewing Bee spotted a potential Line Of Duty crossover in this week’s show as the amateur sewers were tasked with creating waistcoats.

As part of reduce, reuse and recycle week, the remaining contestants were given the task of making garments out of existing items of clothing, kicking off with a gentleman’s waistcoat as the first challenge.

While all of the contestants did a valiant effort and created some very impressive pieces out of old jackets and other second-hand items, viewers were distracted by the subject matter.

Many took to Twitter to point out that a certain DI Steve Arnott (aka Martin Compston) was probably watching the show to pick up some sartorial tips.

Given that the character is known for rocking a waistcoat on Line Of Duty, viewers were eager to see him in one of the jazzy upcycled numbers.

They tweeted: ‘Special guest mannequin: DI Steve Arnott’, ‘Waistcoats? Are #SewingBee doing #LineOfDuty?’ and ‘Steve Arnott watching intently.’

Others joked: ‘ha! The #SewingBee #Lineofduty / Steve Arnott challenge! If only they had @martin_compston to model the finished garments’ and ‘Waistcoats you say? Someone needs to let Steve Arnott know!’

As well as the waistcoats, the contestants were also asked to make a stylish garment for a woman out of army surplus materials as well as a made-to-measure dress for their models created out of old pairs of jeans.

The challenge this week was not only to create something striking, unique and exceptionally well made, but to reuse clothing which had already been sewn and tailored, adding to the difficulty of choosing the appropriate pieces from second hand items.

Despite it being a closely-fought battle, Adeena ended up being the sixth sewer to leave the show after judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant deemed her creations not to be as strong as the others.

The Great British Sewing Bee airs on Wednesdays at 9pm on BBC One.
