Cher is getting a biopic, and all we have to say is a) take our money and b) why hasn’t this happened sooner?

The legendary singer and actress, who turns 75 today, announced the news on social media on the eve of her birthday, revealing Universal Pictures is backing the movie about her life.

In classic chaotic Twitter style, Cher tweeted: ‘Ok Universal is Doing Biopic With My Friends JUDY CRAYMER,GARY GOETZMAN PRODUCING. THEYY PRODUCED BOTH MAMMA MIA’S,& MY DEAR DEAR Friend 4 YRS, & OSCAR WINNER..ERIC ROTH IS GOING 2 WRITE IT FORREST GUMP A STAR IS BORN SUSPECT TO NAME A FEW OF IS FILMS.’

Cher will serve as a producer on the film alongside Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, known for their work on the Mamma Mia! franchise, which featured the ‘Goddess of Pop’.

The as-yet-untitled biopic will be written by Oscar-winner Eric Roth, whose films include Forrest Gump, The Insider and Munich.

He previously worked with Cher on 1987 mystery thriller Suspect.

Craymer said: ‘Gary and I are thrilled to be working with Cher again and this time bringing her empowering and true life odyssey to the big screen.

‘One cannot help but be drawn to and inspired by Cher’s larger than life talent, fortitude, unique wit, warmth and vision.

‘Her unparalleled success in music, film and TV have inspired generations. We could not be happier to tell her story to cinema audiences.’

The biopic won’t be short of material, as it is expected to chart Cher’s transformation from shy duo partner to fashion icon, Oscar-winning actress and legendary solo popstar.

Cher first entered the world of showbiz at the age of 16 when she met Sonny Bono, while he was working with producer Phil Spector, and the teenager sang backing vocals on songs like Be My Baby and You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.

Sonny and Cher got married and formed a duo, leading to worldwide success with their song I Got You Babe and their smash show The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.

The couple divorced in 1975, but by that point Cher was considered a fashion icon due to her love of daring outfits, and she embarked on a solo career with hits like Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves.

In the 1980s, Cher decided to move into the world of acting, and it paid off – after roles in films including Silkwood and The Witches of Eastwick, Cher won the best actress Oscar for Moonstruck in 1987.

In the 90s, she made a chart comeback, reinventing herself with the auto-tuned dance pop number one Believe, and has sold over 100 million records throughout her career.

In recent years, Cher’s acting career has also continued to contribute to the camp hall of fame with standout roles in films like Burlesque and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, while the legend is also known for her activism in the LGBTQ+ community.

What a queen.

Producers will be hoping that the Cher biopic will achieve the success of recent high-profile biopics, which were smashes at both the box office and awards season.

Bohemian Rhapsody, which told the story of Freddie Mercury and Queen, grossed more than £640 million after its 2018 release and won the best actor Oscar for Rami Malek, while Rocketman, the Sir Elton John biopic, won the Golden Globe for best actor for Taron Egerton and the Oscar for best original song.
