PS5 sells twice as much as Xbox Series X during 2021 claims analyst

Sony seem to be maintaining a clear lead in the new generation console wars, although the Nintendo Switch is still the biggest seller.

When both consoles difficult to get hold of for the foreseeable future it’s very difficult to gauge how well the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X might be doing, especially in relation to each other.

Since launch it’s been reported that the PlayStation 5 is outselling Microsoft’s new consoles, even though Sony’s is generally harder to get hold of, and now analyst group Ampere Analysis has tried to work out exactly how each format is faring.

According to them the PlayStation 5 is outselling the Xbox Series X by a factor of 2 to 1, with Sony’s console selling 2.83 million between January and March, and Microsoft’s just 1.31 million.

According to Sony they shipped (not sold) 3.3 million consoles during that period, so Ampere’s figures do seem to be broadly correct.

Microsoft has not provided any hardware sales data for the Xbox since the Xbox 360 era, so Ampere’s estimate is the closest we have so far.

Sales of the Nintendo Switch are also supply constrained, although not to nearly the same degree as the other two consoles, with Ampere suggesting that 5.86 million Switches were sold in the first quarter of the year – compared to the 4.72 million Nintendo claimed it shipped.

‘Switch will keep outselling the new Sony and Microsoft consoles during 2021 – the platform is at the peak of its sales cycle and is performing very strongly’, says Ampere analyst Piers Harding-Rolls.

‘Sony will be pleased that its PS4 market share is continuing into the new generation but it is very hard to gauge real demand under the current market conditions.’

What would happen if they were all easy to get hold of? (pic: Ampere Analysis)
