“The Fire is There and It’s Burning”: Roger Federer Reflects on Return to Tennis After Surgery

Roger Federer didn’t enjoy a great comeback on the tour as he suffered a defeat in his recent match. Playing against Pablo Andujar, the Swiss Maestro lost in straight sets in the second round of the Geneva Open 2021. The final scoreline of the match was 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.

Roger Federer didn’t play many matches in the 2020 tennis season due to his knee injury. In a recent interview, he talked about his expectations for the 2021 tennis season. He also mentioned his experiences of the last year.

“It’s an interesting year,” began Federer. “It’s (2020) been a tough or difficult year for so many of us. You know, with the virus last year or so, I’ve had my double knee surgery. That’s like the smallest of the problem, to be honest. We’ve barely traveled as a family as well. But, I think now we’re just on the cusp of me coming back on the tour.”

Federer highlighted that even though he faced quite a lot of difficulties last year, he is optimistic about the 2021 tennis season. He reflected that he is fit right now and will like to be consistent on the tour after his knee surgery.

“Really can’t wait again to play matches”- Roger Federer

Federer explained that his knee is doing quite well and he is hopeful of playing well on the tour again. He believes that he still has a lot of fire left in him and is eager to know how much more he’ll be able to play.

“So it’s really exciting for me to see what’s left in the tank for me. I mean, the fire is there and it’s burning. I really can’t wait again to play matches and I’m happy that my knee is doing much better. It’s healing well,” added the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

After the ATP Geneva Open 2021, Roger Federer will travel to Paris for the French Open 2021. He hasn’t played well on clay in the recent past and interestingly, won his last French Open title way back in 2009. However, fans still have high expectations from the Swiss Maestro and want him to deliver this season. Will Federer be able to once again shine at Roland Garros 2021?
