AEW Dynamite Viewership Falls For Second Week in A Row

AEW garnered some good ratings for a few weeks. The promotion even had a back-to-back rating of a million viewership. However, recently that rating is dropping.

The ratings for last Wednesday Night’s Dynamite were revealed recently. Multiple sources confirmed their ratings dropped even more after last week’s Blood and Guts.

Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter tweeted out that AEW Dynamite averaged 821,000 in viewership and got a rating point of 0.28 in the 18-49 demographic.

Where Blood and Guts got an average of 936,000 viewers and saw a 0.31 in the 18-49 demo. Hence, this week saw a staunch drop of 115,000 viewers (12.3%) from the prior week. The demo rating is also 9.7% down since last week.

This week saw some good matches in the card including a scathing promo from new AEW TNT Champion Miro. Christian Cage returned to the ring. Serena Deeb also defended her NWA Women’s Championship against Red Velvet.

Why is there a drop in AEW numbers?

Several marquee players including Jon Moxley, Eddie Kingston, Hikaru Shida, Britt Baker, Chris Jericho, Cody Rhodes appeared during the Dynamite this week.

However, the main event was a little lackluster as AEW Tag Team Champions Young Bucks defended their title against newbie Varsity Blondes. The champions retained their titles.

So what could be the reason for the rating drop? This week the reason could be the lack of a great main event. However, there is the chance that the rating drop is just the beginning.

The reason for the future possible drop lies in a different sport altogether. The NBA playoffs are starting soon, and it will affect both WWE and AEW. The playoffs will affect ratings for the next two to five weeks, so fans could expect even lower ratings.

There are some changes lined up for the promotion. Next week, AEW is arranging a special Friday Night live version of Dynamite and will host Double or Nothing PPV on Sunday afterwards. AEW is also moving to a new viewing platform, TBS from January 22, 2022.

AEW President Tony Khan also announced a new series named, “AEW: Rampage.” He said, “TBS has the same passion for wrestling today, but will offer AEW and our fans more prime time programming, content and global opportunities that will establish TBS as the world’s undisputed destination for wrestling.”
