Saoirse Ronan will make her UK stage debut as Lady Macbeth in a ‘feminist’ version of the William Shakespeare play at London’s Almeida theatre.

The actress will reunite with her Mary Queen Of Scots co-star James McArdle for the production, titled The Tragedy Of Macbeth.

The play is said to present a ‘more equivalent relationship’ between the Macbeths than what has previously been shown, according to the Almeida’s artistic director, Rupert Goold.

Yael Farber will help stage the show to be ‘a visceral experience’ in the small and intimate theatre.

The Tragedy Of Macbeth had been in the works before theatres were forced to close due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with the play now set to open in September.

Lady Bird and Little Women star Saorise is one of several ‘extraordinary young actors’ involved in the Almeida’s new season, as it will begin to reopen its doors in mid-June.

The venue will feature socially distanced audiences of around 100-120 people, reduced from its usual capacity of 325.

In the midst of the pandemic, the Almeida has had the chance to recharge their batteries away from the ‘hamster-wheel’ of their usual schedule of busy shows, Robert explained.

He also aims to encourage young audiences and the local communities to attend events, offering a number of free tickets to those aged under 25.

One of the first plays to be shown at the Almeida following its reopening is called And Breathe…, a theatrical adaptation of Yomi Sode’s upcoming poetry collection, Manorism.

The show will focus on loss and grief, while also featuring both projections and live music.

Miranda Cromwell is serving as director, while David Jonsson – who starred in the BBC drama Industry – will appear in a lead role.

David had previously been cast in Daddy, the play by Jeremy O Harris, which the Almedia postponed due to the global health crisis.

Other shows opening at the Almeida include Lolita Chakrabarti’s two-hander Hymm, which had previously been livestreamed from the empty venue in February, as well as the world premiere of Once Upon a Time in Nazi Occupied Tunisa by Josh Azouz.
