Stephen Colbert tells Lisa Kudrow he was rejected after audition for Friends role

Stephen Colbert has revealed he nearly got the chance to star on Friends after opening up about his failed audition with Lisa Kudrow.

The talk show host recalled his attempt to land a guest role on the hit sitcom while chatting to the Phoebe Buffay actress on Wednesday’s episode of The Late Show.

Recalling his ill-fated audition for a one-week recurring role, the 57-year-old explained: ‘I got called in, auditioned on the set and everything like that.

‘Basically, if I got it they would have pushed me in a room and I would have started working with you guys.’

The comedian added: ‘And… I didn’t get it. I didn’t get it. I didn’t get it. I’m sure you would have remembered working with a Stephen Colbert. And boy, did I need a gig at the time. Boy.’

Lisa was on the show to promote the highly-anticipated Friends reunion special, which finally makes it’s way to HBO Max next week.

The special see Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa join forces once more to reminisce on one of the greatest sitcoms of all time.

Although it’s not a new episode of the much-loved show, a teaser trailer revealed that the cast reenacted iconic scenes and shared backstage secrets as they chatted to host James Corden.

It is still unclear when or how fans in the UK will be able to tune into the program, however it is believed Sky might get the rights.

Friends: The Reunion airs on HBO Max on May 27.
