Daði Freyr looks forward to Eurovision in a hotel after his band withdraw from live final due to positive Covid test
Daði Freyr will unfortunately be watching tonight’s Eurovision Song Contest from the comfort of his hotel room after his band pulled out of the live shows when a member tested positive for Covid-19.
The singer and his group, Daði og Gagnamagnið, are one of the favourites to make the top five in the final of the contest with their song 10 Years, thanks to the success of their viral 2020 entry Think About Things.
Sadly Daði and his band had to withdraw from the semi-finals and the grand final in Rotterdam as a result of a team member contracting coronavirus.
Their semi-final performance was replaced by a recording of their rehearsal, with the pre-recorded clip also set to be shown during tonight’s final.
Daði took to Twitter ahead of the big final to share his disappointment that he will not be there in person tonight as he instead looks forward to watching the show on television.
He wrote: ‘Tonight I will sit in a hotel and watch Eurovision for the 5th night in a row.’
We feel you Daði, we feel you.
He then shared a gif of his wife Árný, that read: ‘We are Gagnamagnið give points.’
On the bright side, Daði later confirmed in a follow-up tweet that he ‘tested negative [for Covid-19] again…. so that’s something.’
He later concluded his messages by encouraging his fans to vote for Iceland in the Eurovision final, joking: ‘If you don’t vote 12 tonight, edgy 18 year old Daði is going to haunt your dreams.’
Last weekend, a member of the Icelandic delegation, who is not in the band, also tested positive for Covid-19, forcing the group to miss the Turquoise Carpet last Sunday (May 16).
A member of the Polish delegation also tested positive.
Due to the two positive tests, the Maltese and Romanian delegations, who were in the same hotel as the Icelandic and Polish delegations, were also forced to skip the event.
Daði og Gagnamagnið is made up of singer Daði Freyr, his wife Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir, who is pregnant, his sister, Sigrún Birna Pétursdóttir, and their friends Hulda Kristín Kolbrúnardóttir, Stefán Hannesson and Jóhann Sigurður Jóhannsson.
The second semi-final saw the members of the group remotely celebrating their entry song getting through to the final of the competition – with singer Huda Kristín Kolbrúnardóttir waving the pansexual flag.
Iceland are set to battle 26 other nations in tonight’s final.
