The Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) will soon have someone new joining her in the TARDIS, as comedian John Bishop will soon be starring in the hit sci-fi programme.

Even though show producers have remained tight-lipped about his role in Doctor Who, there are some details we do know.

Read on to find out more about who he’s playing and what his role will entail.

Who is John Bishop playing in Doctor Who?

The Scouser was unveiled as part of the cast of Doctor Who following the New Year’s Day special Revolution of the Daleks, with a short teaser confirming that he would be playing Dan, the Time Lord’s new companion.

During a previous appearance on The Graham Norton Show, John revealed that he had accidentally shared too much about his character.

The 54-year-old had taken part in an online workshop for drama students and let slip that his upcoming character was also from Liverpool.

The full details aren’t meant to be revealed until the 13th season of the much-loved sci-fi programme airs.

John explained there was no hiding the fact that his character was from Liverpool and spoke with a Liverpudlian accent.

‘I went, “Well where do you think he comes from? Have a guess!” I’m not Tom Cruise, I can act as long as the character happens to look and sound a lot like me,’ he said.

‘So, I just mentioned that the character was from Liverpool which then, somewhere on a Doctor Who website, someone picked it up – “There’s a new character and he’s from Liverpool, the story’s based in Liverpool”.’

John joining the cast comes after Bradley Walsh (Graham) and Tosin Cole (Ryan) left the show. Mandip Gill will continue to play Yaz.

The start date for the next series of Doctor Who has yet to be announced. Filming for the upcoming series began in November 2020 and was scheduled to last ten months.

The number of episodes has been cut from 11 to eight due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic.

As the show is meant to be returning this year, don’t expect to see any new adventures until the second half of 2021.

Is this Jodie Whittaker’s last season as Doctor Who?

Jodie Whittaker, who has played the lead role in Doctor Who for three years, is officially leaving the show.

The first female Time Lord will return to our screens for one more series in Autumn 2021 before departing, with the show eager to regenerate once more.

An official air date for Doctor Who series 13 is yet to be announced.
