Anne Boleyn on Channel 5: Release date and cast of Jodie Turner Smith’s drama
The release date for Channel 5’s upcoming historical thriller Anne Boleyn, starring Jodie Turner-Smith, has been announced.
The Queen and Slim actress portrays a brand new version of the tragic queen, who was beheaded by her husband King Henry VIII after their marriage fell apart.
Anne, Henry’s second wife, was notoriously killed for high treason on May 19, 1536, after failing to produce a male heir.
Coming to Channel 5 next month, the drama will follow the final months of Anne’s life, as she tries to establish a future for her daughter as the powers that surround her begin to threaten her life.
When does Anne Boleyn start on Channel 5?
Anne Boleyn will debut on Channel 5 at 9pm on Tuesday, June 1.
The six-week shoot for the three-part series, which took place in UK locations such as Castle Howard in North Yorkshire, wrapped in December 2020.
BAFTA Award-winning director Lynsey Miller (Deadwater Fell, The Boy with the Topknot) directed the show, which was written by Eve Hedderwick Turner.
What is Anne Boleyn about?
The three-part programme follows the final few months of the Royal’s life, from her own perspective.
It charts the downfall of her relationship with Henry, as she battles to keep his attention, while also securing a future for herself and daughter, Elizabeth I.
As Henry (Mark Stanley) finds a new love in Jane Seymour (Lola Pettricrew), Anne’s life slowly slips out of her hands as she tries to fight against the patriarchy she’s married into.
Anne Boleyn will show the key moments that caused Anne to topple, unpicking her immense strength, her fatal vulnerabilities and her determination to be an equal among men.
Who is in the cast of Anne Boleyn?
Jodie leads a stellar cast for the historical drama, with I May Destroy You’s Paapa Essiedu starring as Anne’s brother and Tudor nobleman George Boleyn, and Lola Petticrew as Jane Seymour.
Henry will be played by Mark Stanley, who has appeared in numerous series including Sanditon and Game of Thrones.
Is there a trailer for Anne Boleyn?
The trailer begins with Anne on trial for treason, where she pleads not guilty, before scenes delve into her fractured marriage with Henry.
‘You may know the history but you don’t know her story,’ it reads.
