Canadian world number fifteen Denis Shapovalov, who had a decent run on the European clay-court swing this year, has announced shock exit from the upcoming French Open.

Denis Shapovalov withdraws from the French Open 2021

Shapovalov, who lost to Casper Ruud yesterday in the Geneva Open finals, surprised everyone with his decision to skip Roland Garros. While the reason behind his exit is yet to be revealed, it comes as a major shock to tennis fans as the Canadian is expected to reach at least the quarter-finals in Paris.

The French Open has already seen exits from veteran players like Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray. Also, notable names like Nick Kyrgios, Borna Coric will also be missing the action this year in Paris.

Coming to Shapovalov, there were no hints regarding an injury during his final match at the Geneva Open against Casper Ruud. The Canadian nearly defeated Rafael Nadal at the Italian Open a couple of weeks ago.

Even the Spaniard mentioned the Canadian to be one of the prime threats to him ahead of the French Open. The young Canadian’s career has been a roller-coaster ride so far. While he is yet to leave a solid impact on the big stage, his skills on the tennis court will amaze tennis enthusiasts all over the world.

Aslan Karatsev benefits from Shapovalov’s Roland Garros exit

At the French Open last year, the Canadian defeated the local hero Gilles Simon in four, enthralling sets in the opening match. But, he was defeated by Roberto Carbellas Baena in the second round.

The next-gen player first came to limelight when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the 2017 Canadian Open. Shapovalov created trouble for the Spaniard with his flat, thunderous forehand winners. Coached by former tennis player Mikhail Youzhny, the Canadian has been performing consistently since last year.

The sudden exit of Denis Shapovalov gives a much-needed boost to the Russian Aslan Karatsev. Karatsev will be seeded anywhere between 17th and 24th in the men’s singles draw.

As a result of this, Karatsev improves his chances of reaching the quarter-finals because he won’t be facing top-8 players till the third round.
