Kate Garraway has shared an update on her husband Derek Draper, revealing his ‘communication is very minimal’ and ‘he can’t really move’.

The former political adviser recently returned home where he receives around-the-clock care after he spent over a year in the hospital battling coronavirus and the various complications which followed.

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate joined Andrew Marr on BBC One today where she spoke about how Derek has been settling in back at home.

‘He came home on April the 7th so we’re a few weeks into it now,’ she said. ‘How is he? Look, he’s devastated by Covid.

‘He can’t really move, his communication is very minimal. There are moments when there’s up, in those moments you feel you know he’s in there. He has a lot of memory.

‘But the accessing of it is very limited. So how is he? He’s a long way from the Derek Draper that you know Andrew but he’s home and he’s alive and he’s asleep now.’

Andrew replied: ‘Give him all our love and all our very best wishes.’

‘Absolutely,’ Kate said.

Kate, 54, has transformed her London home to cater to Derek’s new complex needs, including turning the downstairs office into a bedroom for the former political lobbyist and renovating the bathroom into a wet room.

Earlier this month, she paid tribute to the nurses who worked tirelessly to care for husband amid his battle with Covid-19.

Kate told Heart Breakfast’s Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden she had previously held an ‘ignorant’ view of the important role nurses have, however after witnessing them care for her husband, she insisted their care helped bring Derek ‘from this frightening place he was in’.

‘We all go “that doctor who saved my life”, “thank you to that incredible surgeon”, but as I’ve seen over the last 14 months, it’s actually the care of nurses that – especially when you’re dealing with something like Covid where there is no cure, and not enough is yet known about how to treat the symptoms although I’m sure the medical profession will get there – it’s their incredible care that has saved Derek’s life,’ she said.

‘It’s that simple.’

The Andrew Marr Show airs Sundays at 9am on BBC One.
