MNEK blasts comment from fan who told him to be ‘slim’: ‘I can be as fat as I want’
MNEK had some choice words for the person who told him he should be ‘slim’ for his fans.
The singer decided he wasn’t going to let the unsolicited comment about his looks slide and replied directly on social media, telling the person to ‘shut up’ and that he was ‘disappointed’ by the remark.
In the exchange on Instagram, which the producer shared on his Twitter timeline, one of his followers commented: ‘We need our slim Mnek back’ adding a fire emoji for some reason.
The star, real name Uzoechi Emenike, didn’t mince his words as he replied: ‘Respectfully this is really disappointing. I acc think you’re an a**hole. [sic]
‘I mean, look, I don’t belong to nobody. I am my own person, I can be as fat as I want and as thin as I want. If you prefer me slimmer, that’s fine. But I don’t need this comment. And I really would appreciate if you took this as a lesson that this opinion of someone else’s body is unwarranted.
‘You don’t know what they’re going thru or what has led them to lose the weight. So just shut up…respectfully.’
The Colour singer had full support from his fans online, with one commenting: ‘I don’t get why people think it’s ok? You’re not a pet.
‘I was stewing about this happening to me on Friday again. Nothing gives anybody the right. No matter if they’re over or under. The fact nor reason is NONE of ur business [sic].’
‘when people say “you have so many people telling you they love you every day, whats one bad comment?” but cant even begin to understand what thay one comment could do to someone :/ im sorry this person said this, i wish some people were taught to shut their mouths,’ another fan added.
Another fan tweeted: ‘Your response is everything!! Shut them down legend Clapping hands signClapping hands sign that persons comment was rude and unnecessary.’
Said another follower: ‘You look incredible, you’re thriving and I hope you’re happy and hydrated king. I’m sorry you had to deal with this mindless s**t completely unprovoked, love you.’
One fan wrote: ‘The absolute audacity. Excellent shut-down from a legend xx’ and another agreed, adding: ‘It’s the “respectfully” at the beginning and end for me… a classy drag.’
The musician has spoken in the past about feeling judged in the music industry because of his sexual orientation.
He said on Beats by Dr Dre’s INFORMAL series: ‘I felt the need to be this martyr, or this person of great importance to the Black queer community, but I think it’s more like, I don’t know, I feel like my actions do that more.
‘I think when I’m being myself, and I’m not worried about the way it looks, I think a lot of people find a lot of comfort in that.’
