“Mind Is Ready to Go”: Roger Federer Confident of Winning More Titles Despite Recent Losses

Roger Federer is on the brink of starting the most crucial part of his comeback. Despite failed attempts at Qatar Open and Geneva Open this year, he is looking ahead positively. And in about a week, the Swiss maestro will begin his campaign at the French Open 2021.

Although the 39-year-old couldn’t win more than one match in the two tournaments, he hasn’t lost sight of his target. Moreover, in a recent interview with GQ magazine, the 20-time Grand Slam champion reiterated his purpose for a comeback.

Roger Federer on his comeback so far in 2021

After the 2020 Australian Open semifinal, Roger Federer did not play professionally for 13 months. In the meantime, he underwent two knee surgeries and worked persistently on recovery.

Furthermore, he returned at Qatar Open 2021, and in no time, mesmerized his fans with clean and confident hitting. However, due to fatigue from the first match, Federer went down in the next round to eventual winner Nikoloz Basilashvili.

“Don’t get me wrong,” Federer told GQ. “I want to win more. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have gone through the whole [last] year of surgeries and the process of doing five weeks on crutches and rehab.”

Due to disappointment at Qatar, the 103 ATP titles winner went back to training and skipped subsequent tournaments. He reappeared on the ATP tour on his home soil at the Geneva Open ahead of 2021 Roland-Garros.

Notably, it was his first clay-court tournament after losing to arch-rival Rafael Nadal at the 2019 French Open semifinal. Federer, a set and a break ahead dropped rhythm in the decider set and lost to Spanish Pablo Andujar in his opening match.

Federer added, “I truly believe I can do it again. [But] I first have to prove to myself that the body can take it. The mind is ready to go.”

Reasonably, the Swiss maestro will put his body to full test at the coming French Open.

Federer’s big chance at Wimbledon Championships 2021

Ultimately, Federer aims to be ready for the Wimbledon Championships two weeks after Roland-Garros. It will be a dream come true for him and his millions of fans if he finds his 21st Grand Slam there.
