Sex Education season 3: Costume designer teases ‘massive’ ending that could lead to ‘interesting’ fourth series
It’s been over a year since hit Netflix series Sex Education last graced our screens, with the season two finale doling out an array of tantalising cliffhangers that left fans anxious to find out what happens next.
How will Dr Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson) be doing in season three with her unexpected pregnancy? Will Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve (Emma Mackey) finally be open about their feelings for each other? And how will Moordale Secondary School fare with a new head in charge?
Ahead of the new episodes being released, which are currently expected to launch later this year, Metro.co.uk spoke to Sex Education’s costume designer Rosa Dias and casting director Lauren Evans about what viewers can expect… and it appears that we’re in for one hell of a treat.
Rosa and Lauren – who are both nominated at this year’s Bafta Television Craft Awards – expressed their hope that Sex Education will continue past season three, which from the sounds of it, is going to have an incredibly dramatic ending.
‘When you see series three, the end of it is really quite interesting,’ said Rosa, whose previous work includes The Inbetweeners and Attack The Block.
‘Whatever happens in four, if it happens, wow – the writers have got a challenge. They’ve got a massive challenge on their hands,’ she continued.
‘It will be really interesting to see if they do do four, what they’re going to do. It’s massive.’ Our curiosity is piqued!
Lauren, who has worked on productions including Game of Thrones and Paddington 2, added that she has ‘no idea what they’re thinking for season four’.
‘We hope that it goes beyond three… and four and five. As long as people want it, as long as the stories are there to tell,’ she said.
However, she pointed out the fact that Sex Education creator Laurie Nunn has stated in the past that viewers probably won’t continue watching these characters after they reach the end of their time in school.
‘Like Laurie said before, Laurie doesn’t want to keep going and put these people through college and university and you know into middle age,’ Lauren said, keeping it ambiguous by adding: ‘But we’ll see.’
Season three of Sex Education will see several new characters join the taboo-breaking show, including Jemima Kirke as Headmistress Hope, Jason Isaacs as Peter Groff, the brother of former headmaster Michael Groff (Alistair Petrie), and Dua Saleh as Cal, a non-binary student at the school.
Lauren explained that ‘they all come in with their own specific narrative that is really exciting and important for season three’.
‘We wanted to find people that not only were right for the roles, but also good fits for the theme of the show and the themes that we explore. Jemima Kirke is just incredible. I can’t say much about her character but she is insanely talented and I’m a massive, massive fan of Girls, so to have her in the series is a total dream,’ the casting director said.
‘Jason Isaacs is just a dude and comes in as Alistair Petrie’s sort of more successful, older brother, which is really cool. And Dua Saleh has a really important storyline that I think will resonate with a lot of viewers and it’s really cool to have them in their first screen role.’
Speaking of her Bafta Television Craft Award nomination, Lauren said she felt ‘thrilled’ to be recognised for the accolade, adding that she is ‘super happy’ to see Sex Education represented in several award categories.
‘Personally I’m really happy because casting has only just been introduced, it was last year. So we’re thrilled to be included now in these awards and especially for this show to be recognised. It’s really thrilling,’ she said.
The British Academy Television Craft Awards take place on Monday 24 May and will be broadcast from 19:00 BST on Bafta’s Youtube Channel.
