The Who are having their legacy and success celebrated with a new commemorative coin launched by The Royal Mint.

The legendary rock group are only the fourth act in history to be honoured as part of the Royal Mint’s music legend series, with previous musicians including Queen, Sir Elton John and David Bowie.

Lead singer and co-founder Roger Daltrey has said: ‘It’s an honour to have a coin produced to celebrate The Who’s musical legacy.

‘The coin’s design captures the true essence of the band and what we represent. It was a fantastic moment being able to strike one of the very first pieces in the collection and see the range of technologies and processes involved in the making of the coin.’

Daltrey has also personally visited the Mint to strike one of the first coins.

Here’s all you need to know if you want to get your hands on one of the special coins:

What is The Who commemorative coin and when is it available to buy?

The Who commemorative coin has been printed with recognisable symbols from the band’s career, such as the Union flag, a Rickenbacker guitar – which is smashing a guitar – and the Mod logo.

When individual coins are placed together, they form a pinball table – a reference to one of The Who’s most recognisable hits, Pinball Wizard.

Some of the coins even feature a special ‘shockwave’ effect which enhances the look and detail of its design.

This effect has been created to honour the band’s record-breaking loud concert that took place in 1976.

The commemorative coin is also now available for purchase as of today (May 24).

The Who commemorative coin is being sold on the official Royal Mint website.

Despite its name, the £5 brilliant uncirculated coin costs £13, while the uncirculated coloured option will set you back £22.50.

The half-ounce silver proof coin is priced at £6, while the one-ounce version is £97.50.

With the exception of the uncirculated variety, the coins are only available for a limited time.

The Royal Mint is also selling limited edition quarter-ounce and one-ounce gold proof coins, but these are no longer in stock.

Are commemorative coins worth anything?

Commemorative coins are known to be collectors’ items, especially for die-hard fans.

If it is rare or limited edition, then it will often be worth far more than it would usually be.

Non-circulating commemorative coins are usually sought after by buyers particulary for their appeal or rarity value.

Coins which have been minted to celebrate certain events, such as the new The Who coin, will usually be more popular with the public.

Another form of coin what can be worth something is those that included errors, such as the 50p coin issued to mark the 2012 London Olympics swimming event.
