Lorraine Kelly has suggested that Kevin Spacey could make a comeback in Hollywood, comparing his return to film with the career of Mel Gibson.

It was recently announced that Spacey is set to return to the screen almost four years after he was accused of sexual harassment and abuse by multiple people.

The actor is set to star in the Italian film L’uomo che disegnò Dio (The Man who drew God), starring alongside Vanessa Redgrave as he plays a detective who investigates a wrongly accused paedophile.

On Tuesday’s edition of Lorraine, the presenter was joined by LA Correspondent Ross King, with the pair discussing Spacey’s return to the screen.

Spacey was accused of sexual harassment and improper behaviour by multiple men in 2017, with one of the accusers, Anthony Rapp, claiming to have been 14 at the time of the incident.

The allegations have been refuted by Spacey, who was fired from the Netflix series House of Cards following the claims.

King pointed out that Spacey’s co-star Redgrave, who is the wife of the film’s director Franco Nero, is known for her ‘political and human rights activism’.

‘It’s going to be a very interesting time and again as you said, will it be his comeback? Or, will it not be?’ King said of Spacey.

‘Well Mel Gibson came back, so you never know,’ Kelly said.

‘You never know, if the movies make money, then that’ll be the bottom line, won’t it,’ she added.

Gibson fell from grace in Hollywood amid accusations of anti-Semitism, with the actor denying in June last year that he called Winona Ryder an ‘oven dodger’.

It was also announced last year that he would not be returning for the Chicken Run sequel.

After becoming one of the most famous film stars of the 1980s and 1990s, in 2006 Gibson went on an anti-Semitic rant against a police officer who pulled him over for drunk driving.

Four years later, he made threats towards former partner Oksana Grigorieva and used slurs in a 30-minute voicemail recording – saying: ‘You look like a f***ing pig in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of n*****s, it will be your fault.’

In 2011, the actor and director apologised, telling Deadline: ‘I’ve never treated anyone badly or in a discriminatory way based on their gender, race, religion or sexuality – period. I don’t blame some people for thinking that though, from the garbage they heard on those leaked tapes, which have been edited.

‘You have to put it all in the proper context of being in an irrationally, heated discussion at the height of a breakdown, trying to get out of a really unhealthy relationship. It’s one terribly awful moment in time, said to one person, in the span of one day and doesn’t represent what I truly believe or how I’ve treated people my entire life.’

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
