Demi Jones has revealed she’s been accused of ‘lying’ about having thyroid cancer by social media trolls.

The Love Island star shared her devastating diagnosis last week after undergoing surgery to remove a ‘golf ball-sized’ lump from her neck earlier in May.

Opening up about her ordeal on Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, Demi said that while she’s been overwhelmed with support, there have been a small group of people accusing her of making up her health battle.

She told Susanna Reid and Bill Turnbull: ‘Even with my cancer, I’ve still had nasty comments, [people saying] “she’s lying”, this and that. I just woke up and thought it’s ridiculous.

‘I don’t respond to anything, I’m quite strong and it’s not worth my time.’

Demi added: ‘It makes me sad. I’m not lying about this, it’s a really serious thing and I don’t want to be going through this.’

However, on a brighter note she thanked her fans stating: ‘I’ve had the most amazing support ever. So many young girls have been messaging me and saying they’ve booked appointments.’

The 22-year-old explained that her appointment to check the lump on her neck had been pushed back for seven months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

‘It’s been a very hard thing to process, it’s all happening very quickly. Honestly every single month it kept getting cancelled,’ Demi said.

‘My stepdad’s got cancer so I knew I had to keep pushing for appointments.’

Thyroid cancer is a rare form of the disease which affects the thyroid gland, a small gland at the base of the neck that produces hormones. It is typically common in people in their 30s and those over 60. Women are two to three times more likely to develop thyroid cancer than men.

Demi’s ultrasound and blood tests came back fine but it wasn’t until doctors offered to drain the fluid that the results came back cancerous.

The TV star revealed: ‘Apparently thyroid cancer’s really slow growing and [the doctor] reckons I’ve had it for years and years and didn’t know.’

Dr Hilary Jones weighed in with his expert advice: ‘It’s easy to assume that because you’re young it’s unlikely to be cancer. We know people have had it difficult to see GPs and in turn GPs have been reluctant to refer to secondary care.

‘Any lump should be examined. Most lumps are innocuous.. In the neck where it’s attached to the thyroid it’s fairly easy [to diagnose].’

The outlook for Demi is looking hopeful as she was reassured that her case of thyroid cancer is ‘’.

However, she said: ‘But it’s the fact I’ve got to go on this journey now and I could never have known.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
