Claressa Shields is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and multiple-time boxing world champion. Shields has been making the news in the MMA world as she will make her debut in the PFL. The Olympic gold medalist will face Brittney Elkin from Westminster, Colorado. With a 3-6 record, Elkin seems to be the perfect opponent for the debutant.
Shields joined an interview with TheMacLife where she talked about her MMA transition before she fights on 10th June. The interviewer asked ‘T-Rex’ if she was glad that she made that switch.
Claressa Shields replied, “Yeah, absolutely, I’m so happy I started now, it’s very humbling. It’s very informational. I’m around some great people. Coach Jackson coach Wink, coach Tusa, Holly Holm, Jonny Bones. I’m around some really great people.”
Claressa Shields is happy to make a quick transition
The Olympian thinks this is the perfect time to make a transition from boxing to MMA. ‘G.W.O.A.T’ is young, unmarried, and has no kids. She said, “I am super happy I started now I couldn’t imagine doing this when I’m 32, 34 years old. No, and after kids and sh*t I couldn’t imagine.”
Therefore, Claressa Shields is happy to start MMA at the young age of 26 as she is in the prime of her career. She has ample time to learn the ropes and excel in another discipline.
Shields also disclosed the fact she wasn’t paid well enough for her worth. Hence, getting sponsorships was very difficult. Furthermore, as she always thought of competing as a mixed martial artist, the search for a bigger paycheck has finally motivated her enough to switch from boxing.
