Alonso Admits He Needs More Time to Adjust to Alpine’s Philosophy

Fernando Alonso has had a tame season so far. Scoring just five points so far, the Spaniard has struggled since his return, with a P13 finish in Monaco adding to his woes. Although his return hasn’t made the impact he hoped for, he remains positive for the rest of the season. During an interview in Monaco, he revealed the influence of Alpine F1’s philosophy, and his motivation to return this season.

Fernando Alonso thinks he needs more races to adjust to Alpine

The Spaniard certainly knows his way around F1. In addition, he knows his way around Renault (now Alpine F1) too! Winning back-to-back titles with the French team, Alonso is considered to be one of the greatest drivers to have ever graced the sport.

However, racing in different forms of motorsport and returning to F1 isn’t as easy as it seems. Although Alonso knows he needs time to settle, he believes that Alpine’s philosophy has a part to play in his current form.

In an interview with Racer, the Spaniard said, “I think it has something to do with the Renault/Alpine philosophy as well. Most of the drivers that came here, in their first year they were struggling.

“So there is something that, we think we have some idea what the cause of it is, but it needs maybe more time than when I signed last year to come back. I thought that within three or four races I would be at 100%, and I think it’s going to take eight or nine.”

Alonso reveals his motivation to return to F1 this season

Alonso revealed the new regulations in 2022 as his primary motivation to return to F1. Although the new regulations were postponed by a year, the two-time world champion believes returning in 2022 would have been more difficult.

The 39-year-old said, “My biggest motivation was the new regulations, but they were postponed, and to come back immediately into 2022 was a bigger challenge, I thought, to adapt quickly to everything.

“That’s the reason, exactly, why I came back this year.”

With Baku inching closer, Alonso will hope he can return to scoring points. In 2018, despite being plum last after Lap 1, the Spaniard finished P7 with McLaren on this track. Can he finish in the points again, three years later?
