Horner Keen on Making Life Difficult for Mercedes After Having It ‘Far Too Easy’

Ever since the V6-hybrid era began, only one team has had an iron grip on the F1 championship i.e. Mercedes. Since 2014, the Silver Arrows have won 7 straight championship titles, and all of them were by quite a convincing margin. However, 2021 is proving to be a year of change. Red Bull has grown resurgent and seems to be giving Mercedes the kind of title fight they haven’t had in a long time. The Austrian team’s boss Christian Horner certainly thinks that it’s about time Mercedes and Toto Wolff had something to worry about.

Speaking to the New York Times, Horner believes the time has come for the Silver Arrows’ domination to end. He said, “Toto has had it far too easy for the last seven years. It’s about time he had something to do.”

Red Bull have well and truly begun their assault on the Brackley-based outfit’s crown. The team’s lead driver Max Verstappen has won 2 out of the first 5 races. He currently sits ahead of Lewis Hamilton on the leaderboard. More importantly, Red Bull too are 1 point ahead of Mercedes in the Constructors’ championship.

They have also begun preparing for a new era, one which will see them using Red Bull branded engines. And to bolster these efforts, the Austrian team has expertly begun recruiting some top men and women from their direct rivals.

All the blueprints are in place for Red Bull to end Mercedes F1’s dominance

Between 2010 to 2013, Red Bull were the team that Mercedes are now. They were the best on the grid in all aspects and were dominating the F1 circus. However, that era is long gone. Now they are plotting to get back to power, and so far, everything seems to be going to plan.

As mentioned earlier, Red Bull are currently competing for the title again. Off the track, they have opened the Red Bull Powertrain department. They’ll be making their own engines from next year onwards, having acquired Honda’s intel. Moreover, they have managed to recruit Ben Hodgkinson from Mercedes as their technical director along with 5 other Mercedes members with more suspected to follow.

With the new aero-rules coming in for 2022, the stars seem to be aligned in the Milton Keynes-based outfit’s favor so far. Will they dethrone Mercedes and reclaim their former glory? Only time will tell.
