The Hills was a glitzy reality series filled with drama – but now Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have revealed their regrets from their time on the show.

The programme was one of the first of its kind and followed the lives of teenagers as they tried to make it in Los Angeles.

Since the show finished in 2010, Heidi and Spencer have had the opportunity to reflect on their time on The Hills, which has seen their fame soar, plummet, and eventually level out.

The duo – who married in 2008 – met while filming the first season in 2006.

Since then, their lives have been filled with theatrics, ranging from breakups and elopements to luxury Hollywood parties.

Even though the series often showed the glamour and excitement of living in Los Angeles, the duo said there are a few things they’d do differently if they could have their time again.

‘I regret bringing my family on the show, I think that was a really big mistake because they told me that was one of the only ways I could have a storyline and there was just so much miscommunication with my mum and me,’ Heidi told Metro.co.uk and other press.

‘I would get mad at her and be like “Why did you say that?”. I didn’t have time to fly to Colorado, check in with her and have certain conversations.

‘I think, with my family, that really put a strain on it for a long time and I’m thankful that I’m in a really good place with them now. But for me, that was really heart wrenching and I wish I didn’t do that.’

The couple were in the spotlight for the six seasons of the show, with the final episode reaching an audience of 3million.

They were some of the most popular reality stars of the time, as you would often see their faces splashed across gossip mags and on the pages of Perez Hilton’s website.

During the interview, Spencer readily admitted that he enjoys fame but he wishes he’d taken more advantage of it while the couple were at the height of their success.

‘I regret trying to leave the spotlight in 2010 when The Hills ended. We said no to a lot of TV opportunities and I felt like we were so famous it would always be there. If anything, that’s when we should have floored the gas pedal and really work the hardest instead of stepped back,’ he explained.

Heidi and Spencer stayed in a Ritz Carlton in Costa Rica for nearly six months after their time on the show, ordering room service for themselves and their dogs every day. Even though it was a luxurious way to spend their time, they were broke at the end of their stay.

‘I never wanted to not be famous, it was just that I thought you could pause it. But with our type of fame it’s not like Tom Cruise where Tom could go to Costa Rica for as long as he wanted and come back and be Tom Cruise so that’s my only regret, not going all-in when we worked so hard,’ Spencer continued.

‘Heidi’s pop album had just come out and we spent $2.7million (£1.9million) on it and we didn’t stay in Los Angeles to promote it.’

While on The Hills Spencer proved to be divisive amongst viewers, as he never held back and always said what was on his mind. The 37-year-old revealed that when he was on the show, he would do whatever producers asked of him.

Even though he doesn’t regret the things he did, he wished the show incorporated testimonials – like The Hills: New Beginnings does now – so that he could explain himself.

‘I did so many things producers told me to do because they were paying me so much money and I was 22 years old,’ he said.

‘I don’t regret it but if I could go back I would say those stupid things and explain: “Well I just got paid a lot of money to say these stupid things.”.

‘It was such a controlled version of us that wasn’t true. It is what it is, I loved being hated for millions of dollars.’

Now the duo star alongside the likes of Justin Bobby, Audrina Patridge, Brody Jenner and Whitney Port in the reboot of the cult-classic show.

The second season of The Hills: New Beginnings promises more drama amongst ‘Hollywood’s most iconic friend group’ after a year of lockdowns.

It reads on the site: ‘From a highly publicised divorce and rekindling former flames to starting new families and surprise pregnancies, all bets are off this season.’

Heidi and Spencer said they are thankful to be on the show, and as they have grown older, they are more appreciative of these opportunities.

‘When we moved to Santa Barbara seven years ago I thought we were done with The Hills, it’s interesting how much is different and how much is the same [on the show], like are you still being that petty and dramatic and fake? Like what is going on?’ Heidi shared.

‘I like to be authentic and Spencer likes being authentic so that’s what we’re similar with. When you see a 35-year-old being fake or whiney you’re like “Oh my gosh, are you still this whiney at your point in your lives?”’

Spencer added: ‘I would say that some people have gotten worse over the years, which makes for good television but to hang out with them you’re like “Oh my gosh, it’s a nightmare”.’

The Hills: New Beginnings S2 launches tonight at 8pm on MTV.
