Analyzing Devin Haney’s Unbeaten Record: Does He Deserve to Be the Champion?

Devin Haney has had a rapid rise to the top of the lightweight division. At just 22, ‘The Dream’ is the WBC lightweight champion of the world. Furthermore, he still has a long future in the sport. So let’s look at his boxing record and see if he deserves to be the champion.

Haney turned pro at 17 and had his first four fights in Mexico. The reason for this is that the American could not compete professionally in the United States until he turned 18. Thus, he became a professional in Mexico, and it was a move that paid its dividends.

‘The Dream’ has an unbeaten record of 25-0. In addition to this impressive record, he has 15 knockout victories, which gives him a respectable 60% knockout percentage. Out of the 15 knockouts, eight have come in the first half of his fights. Therefore, his record reflects his incredible skill.

However, the 22-year-old still comes under serious criticism for his resume. In his 25 professional fights, Haney has not fought many big names. His last bout against an aging Yuriorkis Gamboa was the best opponent he had faced. Therefore, he has fought no one of note and is still a world champion despite never facing one.

Due to a few circumstances, he was awarded the belt via email.

Devin Haney: Amateur career

Haney has had a successful yet questionable professional career. However, that will certainly change with time as he will have to face the best in his division. So even though we know a lot about his professional career, what do we know about his amateur record?

Haney enjoyed heaps of success in the amateur scene. By the time he turned pro in 2015, he amassed an incredible 138-8 record. This included Gold at the US Junior National Championships in 2014 and the USA Youth National Championships in 2015. While he also won a Silver at the USA Junior National Championships in 2013.

Despite all his amateur achievements, Haney’s amateur days are most famous for fights against the current lightweight superstar, Ryan Garcia. The pair met four times in the amateur scene. Haney won two and lost two against ‘King Ry.’

Therefore, success has followed ‘The Dream’ every step of the way. However, many will continue to point at his resume and question whether or not he deserves to hold the WBC lightweight belt at this time.

What do you make of Devin Haney’s record? Do you think he deserves to be the WBC world champion?
