Devin Haney’s Boxing Journey: When Did He Start Boxing and Become a Pro?

The lightweight division in boxing is one of the sport’s most stacked divisions right now. With exciting champions and many capable challengers, the 135-pounders have slowly become the ones to watch. And Devin Haney is in the thick of it all.

Haney, the WBC champion in the division, is one of the biggest stars. At just 22, he has solidified himself as a global star and backed it up with an unbeaten record in the ring. However, where did it all start for ‘The Dream?’

The 25-0 boxer started boxing when he was just 7. He spoke to Sporting News and revealed that his boxing journey began when he started finding himself in scuffles in school. Frustrated with his behavior, his father Bill Haney took ‘The Dream’ to the boxing gym.

Since then, Haney, who stuck to boxing, found his calling. Haney explained that before sticking with boxing, he used to play other sports as well. However, he then remained with the sweet science, and it has brought him tremendous success.

When did Devin Haney turn pro?

Haney enjoyed a lot of success from an early age. He amassed an amateur record of 138-8, winning several National Championships along the way. Therefore, it was no surprise that Haney turned pro. By the time he became a professional boxer, he had practically completed the amateur game.

Haney turned pro at the tender age of 17. Thus, he became a professional boxer after just ten years in the sport. And turning pro was difficult. Since he could not fight professionally in the United States until he was 18, ‘The Dream’ decided to kick start his career in Mexico.

Therefore, he made his debut and fought his next four fights across the border. Moreover, ten of his first 15 bouts were in Mexico. However, those days are long gone, and now, just six years into the sport, Haney will compete as the main event in the fight capital of the world.
