Suranne Jones has revealed that her father passed away from coronavirus back in January.

Sharing an Instagram throwback snap of her parents on a beach in Cornwall, the Gentleman Jack star wished her late mother, who passed away over four years ago from dementia, a happy birthday when she also shared the tragic news about her father.

In the heartfelt caption, the 42-year-old said she was still ‘coming to terms’ with her father losing his battle to the virus but acknowledged that he had reunited with her mother.

Suranne wrote: ‘Happy birthday mum❤️ forever on a beach in Cornwall with dad❤️

‘Mum passed away 4 and a half years ago and my father sadly passed away this January after fighting Covid and the affect it had on his body.

‘We are still coming to terms with it all but I know they are together and today I want to celebrate them both. My thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones. Today and always. ❤️❤️🌹🌹’ she concluded.

Suranne has previously credited her father for encouraging her acting career.

Born Sarah Jones, her father even came up with the idea of her taking on her great-grandmother’s name Suranne because her birth name was already registered with the actors’ union Equity.

In an interview from 2019, she told The Guardian that she had a ‘happy’ childhood.

‘Friday nights, me and my brother got a Fry’s Peppermint Cream, picked a video from the video shop. My brother was older, very bright. He went to university,’ she said.

Suranne continued: ‘I wasn’t academically bright – maybe at first, when I was little, but it was lost. I started doing a drama workshop and got really into it, then I did a BTec in performing arts and started to work.

‘I left home at 16, toured [with regional musicals], did some theatre education in schools. I would get home for little moments, to drop in, get my clothes washed, then go again.’

Meanwhile, a month after her father sadly passed away, Suranne was seen filming for season two of the historical drama series Gentleman Jack.

Based on the true story of real-life diarist Anne Lister, the drama is set in Yorkshire in the 1830s.

Gentleman Jack series two has yet to receive a release date.
