Warning: spoilers ahead for Lucifer season five part two.

After nine months of waiting, Lucifer fans finally have access to the season five ending on Netflix.

The eight-episode arc of season five part two calls into question whether Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) can fill the shoes of his father, God (Dennis Haysbert).

But those are big shoes to fill, especially considering he’s not the only potential candidate, with his twin brother Michael (also Tom) vying for the job.

So what happened in the lead-up to the new episodes and how does the ending pan out?

Lucifer season 5 recap

The beginning of season five part one picks up after Lucifer has headed back to Hell from LA, leaving all of his Earth-bound acquaintances behind.

Michael, Lucifer’s twin brother who looks exactly like him, is introduced in the season premiere, saving Chloe Decker (Lauren German) when she is being attacked during a murder case.

After returning to Earth, Lucifer is sent into a frenzy when Chloe is kidnapped during an investigation.

Eventually, it’s discovered that Michael was keeping Chloe hostage in a cave.

After Lucifer manages to free Chloe from Michael’s grasp, Michael challenges Lucifer to a duel.

But in a huge cliffhanger, the mid-season finale of the fantasy dramedy saw the almighty God descend upon Earth for the first time to break up the fight between Lucifer, Michael and Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside).

In season five part two, God decides to depart for his retirement, leaving for an alternate universe with his wife, the Goddess (Tricia Helfer).

When Amenadiel points out that God hasn’t named his successor, the omnipotent being explains that it’s no longer his decision, and that they’ll figure it out amongst themselves.

But of course, it’s not quite so simple.

How does Lucifer season 5 part 2 end?

While Lucifer vies to take up his father’s mantle, so does his conniving twin, Michael.

An election is held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where Michael wins the majority of their siblings’ vote for the throne.

However, Michael isn’t immediately imbued with God’s powers, which he believes is due to the result of the vote not being unanimous.

As such, Michael and Lucifer engage in a fight to the death, during which Chloe intervenes to sabotage Michael’s Azrael’s Blade.

But Chloe finds herself in the line of fire in doing so, with Michael stabbing her in a fit of rage.

After a devastated Lucifer watches Chloe die in his arms, he seeks her out in heaven, even though returning to heaven would result in his certain death, after previously being banished from the celestial plane.

While in heaven, Lucifer is protected from burning to death by wearing Lilith’s ring of immortality.

But in order to send Chloe back to Earth, he places the ring on her finger, before declaring his love for the detective and seemingly bursting into flame.

When Chloe returns to Earth and wakes up in her mortal body, she engages in battle with Michael and is seconds away from killing him when Lucifer returns.

Rather than execute Michael, he slices off his twin’s wings, before realising that he has now become God’s successor, hence why he survived his time in heaven.

As everyone present at the coliseum kneels before him, the season ends with Lucifer wryly stating: ‘Oh my me!’ Oh my me indeed.

Has Lucifer been cancelled?

While it was initially believed that season five would be the final outing for Lucifer, a sixth season is on the way, which recently wrapped filming.

The fantasy show was axed by Fox after season three, but it was then picked up again by Netflix, much to the delight of its fans.

When and where can you watch the ending of Lucifer season 5?

Lucifer season five is available to watch on Netflix.

The first three seasons of Lucifer are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video and seasons four and five are available on Netflix.
