Monaco GP “a Major Setback” for Mick Schumacher: Rosberg

Mick Schumacher was one of the most talked about drivers before the start of the 2021 season. The son of seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher, Mick joined Haas after winning the 2020 F2 championship with Prema Racing.

However, his debut has garnered mixed reviews. While he has shown flashes of brilliance, he’s crashed a few times as well. Former world champion, Nico Rosberg, gave his opinion on the other side of Schumacher’s debut.

Rosberg: Mick Schumacher has made one too many crashes

In his first season in F1, the only driver Schumacher has consistently beaten is his teammate, Nikita Mazepin. In addition, he finished ahead of Nicholas Latifi in the Portuguese Grand Prix earlier this season.

However, after a practice session-ending crash on Saturday in the Monaco Grand Prix, the German could not take part in qualifying later on. To add to his woes, his streak of finishing ahead of Mazepin ended on Sunday, after engine troubles forced him to run in 18th place.

With Monaco not being his first crash this season, 2016 world champion Rosberg had a few words for his fellow German. He pointed out that his crashes have smudged what has been a fairly good season for him so far.

The 35-year-old said, “One accident is fine, but two is too many. As good as the season has been for him so far, this has been a major setback for him.”

Uncle Ralf Schumacher comes to Mick’s defense

Despite his mistakes, very few expected Mick Schumacher to have a season where he regularly scores points. Haas is far behind the pack at the moment, a point which his uncle Ralf highlighted when coming to his nephew’s defense.

The former Williams F1 driver said, “We all made mistakes. We should let him drive in peace. None of us have ever sat in a car as under-performing as Mick’s.”

With a few crashes peppered in his debut season, Schumacher now heads to Baku. Home to one of the most unpredictable races on the calendar, Schumacher will hope to stay out of trouble across the weekend. Can the 21-year-old come back stronger in the “Land of Fire”?
